Seminole Radio Control Club hosts annual Fun-Fly event
The Seminole Radio Control Club (SRCC) hosted their annual Fun-Fly event on Sept. 23, 2023, not only showcasing their passion for radio-controlled aircraft but also raising $1,600 for UF Health Shands Children’s Hospital. The impactful fundraiser officially concluded in November when the SRCC presented UF Health staff with a check during their recent club meeting.
“For the past decade or so, our annual fundraising fly-in has raised funds for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals,” SRCC secretary and media manager Jeff Owens said. “This came about as a result of one of our members receiving support from CMN while being treated at UF Health Shands. We are pleased to be able to help support the efforts of such a worthy organization, while at the same time being able to share the hobby that we all enjoy.”
The non-profit organization located in Tallahassee, Fla., which is dedicated to the world of radio-controlled aviation, welcomed guests under clear skies at Apalachee Regional Park. Pilots had the opportunity to showcase their skills by maneuvering their own model airplanes through the skies under remote control. Beyond the flights, the event also doubled as a learning experience, providing an opportunity for enthusiasts to share in their passion.
Adding to the atmosphere, SRCC ensured that their guests were well-fed, offering a spread that included burgers, hot dogs, drinks, and other “fixins.’”
“The Seminole Radio Control Club has a history of reaching out to the community in order to share the hobby of building and flying radio control aircraft. This outreach involves free flight training, fly-ins that are open to the public, and fundraising events,” Owens said.
This year’s contribution brings SRCC’s cumulative donation to CMN Hospitals at UF Health Shands Children’s Hospital to an impressive total of more than $10,800 since 2014. The club’s dedication to combining their passion for radio-controlled aircraft with philanthropy continues to make a positive impact on pediatric healthcare.
